Matanzas Press

 Our Book Collection:

Matanzas Press is dedicated to continuing the literary tradition of the Nation's oldest city by presenting the work of writers who can proudly call St. Augustine their home. Who knows? Maybe we'll find someone whose name can someday be added to the list of literary luminaries who have passed this way. Surely, it will be someone who has paused atop the ancient battlements of the Castillo de San Marcos and heard Spanish melodies "floating like incense" above the bright waters of the Matanzas.

New From Matanzas Press!
Uncle Sam's

by Jay Humphreys, John Potter (Cover art)

Book Description
It's April 1942 and St. Augustine glistens in the warm Florida sun. For the residents of America's oldest city, the ravages of a world war seem far away. Comfortable in their tidy, historic community, increasing tourism seems more important than fighting fascism. But for the town's black residents, the war has brought their situation into sharp contrast – especially when it comes to UNCLE SAM's – a place where flag-waving patriotism, big band music and cold beer are blended nightly to conceal a horrible secret!

In his new novel, Jay Humphreys mixes German U-boats, the FBI, racial strife, patriots, scoundrels and even Cab Calloway into an unforgettable story of courage and sacrifice.

Reviews

"Filled with colorful characters and voices, Uncle Sam's blends history, espionage and race relations into a lively and imaginative tale the brings St. Augustine alive during the early days of America's entry into the Second World War."

Seasons of the Sea
by Jay Humphreys, Florida Sea Grant College, Jim Wilson (Illustrator)

Book Description
Stand on any stretch of Florida coastline and what do you see? A few terns and gulls circling overhead, sandpipers rushing the outgoing tide to see what meals it uncovered, perhaps a dolphin leaping and playing. But the most interesting events happen beyond our sight. A fascinating but largely ignored world thrives within the coastal waters not more than a few yards or, at most, a few miles offshore in the vast Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
As the seasons change on land, so do they in the waters that surround Florida. Seasons of the Sea delves into what creatures come and go in each of the state's six main regions—northeast, southeast, the Keys, southwest, the Big Bend, and the Panhandle. In the summer in northeast Florida, for example, sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, and human activity is curtailed to protect the hatchlings when they make their run to the sea. In the Panhandle's summer heat, cannonball jellyfish abound.

Accompanying the text are artist Jim Wilson's charming illustrations showing, among other creatures, stingrays, tarpon, manatees, sharks, whales, crabs, and oysters in their natural habitat.
